Tanika Gupta is one of the hottest writing talents around. She was
nominated for an EMMA and was awarded the Asian Woman of Achievement
Award 2003 for her television, radio and stage plays - including
the critically acclaimed Fragile Land recently at Hampstead Theatre.
Now
she's turned her attention to updating Harold Brighouse's 1916 classic
Northern comedy 'Hobson's Choice' at London's Young Vic Theatre
from 26 June - 9 August.
Set
at the heart of Salford's thriving South Asian Community, Hobson's
Choice cuts across time and cultures to reveal the funny side of
family life and is filled with plenty of characters that you're
bound to recognise!
Widower
Hari Hobson has a successful dressmaking business and three daughters.
The oldest, Durga, is the brains behind the operation. But when
Hobson says that Durga is too valuable to lose and must give up
all idea of getting married, she takes her fate into her own hands.
'Can't we choose husbands for ourselves?' she asks. 'I've been telling
you for the last five minutes, you're not even fit to choose dresses
for yourselves.' Hobson replies.
'I'm
a decent minded man' he adds,'I'm British middle class and proud
of it. I stand for common sense and sincerity.'
Hobson's
choice runs at The Young Vic from 26 - June to 9 August.
Performances:
Monday to Saturday at 7.30pm, Saturday Matinees at 2.30pm, Midweek
