The
Firebrand Theatre Company presents 'Made In England', a play that
incorporates a multi-media/live performance and a club night at
The Door, Birmingham Repertory Theatre on Monday 29th and Tuesday
30th March. Based on a story written by playwright Parv Bancil in
1997, the play is set for a dramatic return to the stage.
Set
around the British Asian music scene, Made In England is the story
of two British Asian musicians from polar ends of the second generation
who, in light of the recent Asian successes, face the opportunity
of clinching a big record deal - but at a compromise. The story
examines the notion of 'selling out' to become successful and the
dilemmas each face in the process.
Parv
Bancil said "It's
really great to bring Made in England back. I originally wrote the
play about a particular London-centric British-Asian scene back
in 1997; the Asian underground. Today in 2004 the vibe of that scene
has spread across the UK and to my surprise the play probably will
be understood by more people today than was in 1997.
Being
part of the dbXpo 2004 festival is very exciting, particularly for
a new arts company like 'Firebrand'. The profile of the festival
is very high. It's a chance for people in the Midlands to see interesting
work from different parts of the UK concentrated in the same space;
and that makes it interesting."
The
performance will also include a multi-media and live performance
gallery where individual artists will present their own work based
on the theme 'Made In England' and what it means to be a British
Asian living in society today.
The
evening will conclude with an upbeat club night where the theme
of the event will continue to be celebrated. World-renowned Asian
Underground group Shaanti will present the club line up in Birmingham,
featuring high profile Brit-Asian artists.
