As
part of the national Black History Month, Hounslow
CIP and Pratap Pawar Triveni Dance Company presents
an unusual coming together. Through the dynamism
of Kathak and the devotional and romantic strings
of the Santoor to celebrate 20 years of cultural
contribution to London. This will be the first
autumn event in Hounslow Council's newly rebranded
Paul Robeson Theatre.
Kathak
enjoys a unique distinction amongst the classical
dances of India in as much as it is open ended.
It allows a lot of scope for improvisation within
rhythmic cycles. Seldom has Kathak been presented
along with a high calibre musician of Pandit Bhajan
Sopori's status, playing the classical instrument
from Kashmir - the Santoor.
Pratap
Pawar comes together with Pandit Bhajan Sopori
to present a creative piece of work. Pratap Pawar
has shone in the ferment of Kathak for many years,
hailed as 'India's Divine Dancer' he has trained,
performed and preserved classical dance traditions
outside the shores of India. He has achieved remarkable
recognition internationally.
Santoor,
100-string instrument played with 2 wooden sticks
possesses a magical and haunting tone combining
melody and rhythm. Pandit Bhajan Sopori, based
in New Delhi is a Santoor player and composer.
This composer is known for his prolific work and
background music for film and TV. On this occasion,
he will explore the possibility of the classical
compositions specifically for Kathak dance.
The
highlight of the performance would be "PANCHTATVA"
- The Five Elements: every living body is understood
to be compounded of five basic elements: FIRE,
WATER, AIR, EARTH, and SPACE. It is the balance/equilibrium
of these elements that makes a body active vibrant
and procreative.
An
evening not to be missed. Dance choreographies
by Pratap Pawar, and our guest choreographer Akram
Khan (Resident Choreographer-South Bank Centre).
Accompanied by a team of Indian Musicians and
dancers - a true feast for the souls of music
and dance lovers!
