'Red' is a captivating new production from Sonia Sabri, one of the
rising stars of British Asian dance. Combining exquisite dance,
arresting visual design and evocative music, 'Red' explores the
cultural and philosophical significance of the visual spectrum's
most potent and resonant colour. Providing insights into the diverse
experiences, interpretations and associations of the colour red
marriage,
blood, urban neon, heat, religious ritual, passion
..'Red'
is the place of release, an opportunity for reflection. It is a
celebration of life.
Sonia
Sabri has established a reputation for marrying the classical tradition
of North Indian Kathak dance with current inventions and ideas.
'Red' places classical Kathak's virtuosity and grace within an unmistakably
modern day setting. Performed by three dancers, including Sonia
herself, 'Red' unites the mesmerising spins, rapid footwork and
the detailed hand gestures of the dance with the driving rhythms
and subtle sensual melodies of live musical accompaniment, which
with echoes of trance beats and jazz riffs has itself a distinctive
contemporary edge.
To
create 'Red', Sonia has been joined by a talent teams of collaborators
including choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh, composer Sarvar Sabri,
designer Jacqueline Gunn, lighting designer Charles Balfour, dancers
Genevieve Jordan and Amina Khayyam and musicians Alvin Davis and
Gulfam Sabri.
