Theatre -> Tamasha Theatre Company celebrates its 21st Birthday

Tamasha Theatre Company celebrates its 21st Birthday
18 March 2010

Kristine Landon Smith and Sudha Bhuchar were awarded the Asian Women of Achievement Award 2005 (Arts & Culture) by Tessa Jowell MPGroundbreaking theatre company Tamasha kicks off its 21st Birthday year with 'Propeller', an intensive artist training initiative. The company was founded in 1989 by director Kristine Landon-Smith and actor/playwright Sudha Bhuchar to bring contemporary work of Asian influence to the British stage. In the last 21 years, Tamasha has produced 19 new plays, presented 1146 performances, and attracted audiences in excess of 210,000, at over 60 theatres around the UK, including London’s major new writing theatres, the Royal Court, Soho Theatre, Hampstead Theatre, Tricycle, BAC and Lyric Hammersmith. The company has also taken shows around the world from Mumbai and Delhi to New York and Los Angeles and been invited twice to premier plays at the Edinburgh International Festival.

Tamasha has been discovering and developing emerging artists with major successes including playwright Ayub Khan-Din, whose play 'East is East' went on to be produced as a smash-hit film, paving the way for other Asian stories into the mainstream. It strives to transform theatre to create a space where British Asian talent takes centre-stage.In 2002, Tamasha began to create formal artist development opportunities. These have increased from six placements in the first year to the creation of opportunities for over 50 artists in 2009/10, including directors, designers, actors, writers and visual artists.

From March 2010, Tamasha marks its 21st Birthday with a programme that celebrates the scope of the company’s work, its unique artistic practice, and its vision for the future in an ever-changing Britain. Following Propeller, highlights include The House of Bilquis Bibi, a reworking of Lorca’s classic play, co-produced with Harrogate Theatre (at Hampstead from 22 July to 14 August + touring); the launch of a new networking site; and exciting artistic collaborations in the lead up to 2012.
