Artistic
Director Jayachandran draws on his background
in contemporary dance and on the traditions of
his native south-east India, incorporating elements
of bharata natyam, Indian folk dancing, and the
local martial arts discipline kalari.
Trans
Avatar is a truly international collaboration,
bringing together the cutting edge talents of
British composer Joseph Hyde and award-winning
German digital artist Christian Ziegler, while
the dancers hail from as far afield as London,
Stockholm and Bangalore. Lighting design is by
Helen Cain and the costumes are designed by fashion
diva Ursula Bombshell.
The
company comprises four dancers: Jayachandran himself,
Imlata regular and Kalari expert Saju Hari, with
Rani Nair and Yamuna Devi. In Trans Avatar their
collective experiences of life in South Asia and
Europe merge in the absorbing and shifting landscape
of Christian Ziegler's digital creations and Joseph
Hyde's soundscape.
The
performances will be accompanied by a series of
site specific workshops in which participants
will be encouraged to explore the effects of different
structures, both external and internal, on physicality
and movement.
