GAURI
SHARMA TRIPATHI: VYUHA - A SQUARE CIRCLE
UK Spring Tour 2004
In
her latest solo work, Gauri Sharma Tripathi explores the configurations
of battle through a unique choreographic language that synthesises
traditional Kathak with a new and dynamic dance vocabulary. Vyuha
sees Gauri showcasing the expression and emotion of dance at its
most supreme - blending the ancient art of Kathak with
other spectacular dance styles to creating a show that is truly
unparalleled.
Casting her body upon the
sacrificial pyre, Uma immolates herself in a final act of loyalty
to her lord and husband, Shiva. The shadows cast by her burning
body become a theatre of war where geometric rules blur - where
square and circle meet
Gauri
is an exponent of the north Indian classical dance form of Kathak.
She has learnt from her guru and mother Padma Sharma, customizing
folk dance styles and other modern and contemporary dance influences
within her classical framework - and creating a form a highly
beautiful, refreshingly unique and visually expressive form of
dance. Gauri is at the pinnacle of bringing Indian classical dance
and music to the forefront across the globe - from Nigeria to
Switzerland and Berlin - from Washinton to Delhi.
Internationally
recognized and critically acclaimed, Gauri has won numerous awards
on the international arena - both as choreographer and performer
from venues such as Munich Biennale, Royal Festival Hall, and
The Millennium Dome to name a few. Gauri was also nominated for
the prestigious young achievers award in 2001 on the Indian Sub-continent
Gauri
has played an integral part in dance media too, working on choreography
and performing with various mainstream television channels and
theatre to collaborative studies with artistes including world
renowned Akram Khan, Dominic Gabella and Sandeep Bhagwati, and
not forgetting her influence in the Bollywood movement both in
India and UK, most recently bringing together the phenomenal dance
extravaganza that was "Escapade" held at the Royal Festival
Hall, attracting over 40000 spectators across two days. Presently
Gauri teaches both in India and London, and sees the world as
her stage.
