Theatre -> Leading Arts Venue 'Watermans' re-opens

Leading Asian Arts Venue 'Watermans' re-opens.

West London cultural flagship, Watermans re-opened on 24 April 2002 with a re-vitalised artistic strategy ensuring them a place at the forefront of Asian Arts development in the UK.

Closed to the public fifteen months ago after a significant ACE grant enabled a re-focusing of the creative vision and essential upgrades to the centres facilities and resources. For over a decade prior to closure, Watermans made a significant contribution showcasing both national and international Asian Arts.

Qualitative research conducted during the closure period amongst their core audience in West London indicated that there was a huge demand for Asian Arts - one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK - and that Watermans was deemed a key player in the delivery of Asian events.

Waterman's geographic location is a strong influence on the strategic development of it's Asian Arts focus . Approximately 23% of the total population in the London Borough of Hounslow (in which Watermans is located), is Asian. The figure rises to 50% within the 15-18 year old school population.

"It's an exciting time for the development of Asian Arts in the UK and Watermans is proud to be driving it. Our artistic programme is designed to cater to a wide cross-section of the local community and we're delighted to be strengthening our commitment to Asian audiences,' says Jan Lennox, director of Waterman.

Programming during the initial few months will include:

  • Internationally acclaimed Indian film actor, Naseeruddin Shah (most recently of Monsoon Wedding) directs and performs on stage in a one-off UK premier of a play 'Ismat Apa Ke Naam.' Shah will perform with his wife, actress Ratna Pathak Shah and their daughter. The play will be performed in Hindu/Urdu language only, 26 April - 5 May.
  • 'Bollywood in Love,' a stunning Indian film poster exhibition, part of BFI ImagineAsia celebrations and opening venue on national tour.
  • Co-producing brand new show from critically acclaimed Asian comedians, The Funjabis.
  • Iranian comedian, Omid Djalili - winner of Time Out Award for Best Stand-Up in 2001.
  • Children's events, participative arts, cinema and digital arts - aimed at all segments of the community.

Watermans will continue to serve all segments of the community with a programme that contains a comprehensive mix of music, Asian comedy, Asian second/third generation theatre, digital arts, an increased commitment to participative arts and community events intended to integrate even more substantially with local communities.
