NAZIA HASSAN FOUNDATIONS AWARDS 2005

Nazia Hassan Foundation Awards 2005The Nazia Hassan Foundation Award ceremony was held at the House of Commons on 17 November 2005. The event attracted the British Asian community leaders and MPs, the diplomatic community, heads of leading business and financial houses and representatives of British and Asian media groups. The NHF Award Ceremony was initiated not only to promote and merit cross cultural Asian talent but also to establish an event that would attract the attention of the media and community heads towards a worthy cause.

This year the recipients included Dr. Avtar Lit of Sunrise Radio for reaching communities, Sonu Lalvani of 'Yatra' for reaching families, Maureen Lines for service of humanity in recognition of her work in northern Pakistan, Hardeep Singh Kohli for the performing arts, Anita Anand as journalist and broadcaster, Sarwar Ahmed for pioneering in print media for the Asians, Nitin Ganatra for 'Bride and Prejudice', Majid Amir Ali for outstanding achievement. Jamila Massey received the life time achievement award.

Speaking on the occasion Nazia's brother Zoheb Hassan said that the aim of the foundation was the rehabilitation of under privileged children and in this respect the need of the hour were the thousands of children rendered homeless and without their families after the earthquake in Pakistan. He outlined a proposal in which port-a-cabins would be used to set up houses and school facilities for these children.

Also speaking on the occasion were Labour MP Mohammed Sarwar, the Deputy High Commissioners of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the Indian Minister of Culture and Director of The Nehru Centre Dr. Atul Khari, Sir Iqbal Sacranie of the Muslim Council of Britain, and Reginald Massey.
