COMMISSIONER
SHADOWING SCHEME LAUNCHED
(20 January 2005)
To
mirror the success of previous schemes, Operation Black Vote in
partnership with the Commission for Racial Equality is launching
the Commissioner Shadowing Scheme. The success of other programmes,
such as the MP and Magistrates Shadowing Schemes have produced a
growing number of participants who have become magistrates and school
governors. Some OBV graduates have become Councillors, whilst others
will be standing as candidates in the forthcoming General Election.
So
now, OBV and the CRE are looking to place eight BME individuals
on the first ever Commissioner Shadowing Scheme. Each participant
will shadow a CRE Commissioner over a period of six months. The
project aims to equip participants with the skills, knowledge and
confidence that will allow them to actively promote the importance
of BME representation on local, regional and national public bodies
and to go on to apply for public appointment.
Simon
Woolley, Operation Black Vote said: 'It is vitally important that
our decision-making bodies begin to reflect the communities they
seek to serve. We know that there is a deluge of talent, which if
afforded the opportunity, will enhance British society. "
Trevor
Phillips, CRE, Chair, said: "Experience has shown us that one
of the best ways to motivate communities with little representation
in senior positions of employment is to give them direct access
to people doing the jobs. It fosters self-belief and a realisation
that with hard work and talent, careers in top jobs are achievable.
Operation Black Vote's schemes have led to increased participation
in professions traditionally perceived as 'white only' and reinforce
the principle that someone's origin does not need to dictate their
destiny."
To
be part of this unique opportunity, individuals should contact Operation
Black Vote on 0208 983 5430 or visit the website: www.obv.org.uk
or e-mail info@obv.org.uk.
