BAND 786 BARRED FROM EXPOISLAMIA 2006 |
American
R&B band Seven 8 Six were barred from performing at ExpoIslamia
on 20th August 2006 despite being heavily promoted by the organisers
Islamic Forum Europe (IFE) in the run up to the event. No statements
have been made by the IFE explaining why Seven 8 Six were barred from
the event, but ExpoIslamia has been criticised for allowing a platform
for radical Muslim Dr Azzam Tamimi.

| BASELESS
SLUR ON ISLAMIC SCHOOLS SAY MUSLIMS |
Muslims
claim that Education Secretary Ruth Kelly deflected blame from foreign
policy with baseless slur against Islamic schools in an interview
with BBC News 24 on 26 August 2006, in which she called for Islamic
schools which promote extremism and isolationism to be shut down.
In the interview she said "Different institutions are open to
abuse and where we find abuse we have got to stamp it out".

LEVELS OF ABUSE OF CHILD WORKERS IN INDIA |
The
Indian Child Labour Act must do more to protect children as new research
reveals shocking levels of abuse of child domestic workers. Save the
Children is calling for the age limit of the act to be raised from
14 to 18 years, as the majority of Indian domestics fall into this
age range.

COMMISSION ON INTEGRATION "COMES UNDER FIRE" |
Communities
Secretary Ruth Kelly today launched a new Commission on Integration
and Cohesion which will look at how communities across the UK can
be empowered to improve cohesion. However, the creation of the new
commission was criticised by Operation Black Vote (OBV) for failing
to address the issues of inequality and racism.

a series of UK Yoga workshops this summer, Swami Ramdev, the guru
of Yoga and Pranayam, returned to India promising to return to hold
a second series. UK Health experts, however, caution followers about
throwing out modern medicine in favour of yoga and pranayam for the

found that seven out of ten Londoners believe that people should be

| THOUSANDS
PRAY FOR JANMASHTAMI BOMB VICTIMS |
A
bomb was thrown on 16th August 2006 during the festival to celebrate
the Birth of Lord Krishna at a Temple in Manipur in India which killed
at least five and injured several others. The attacks took place on
the same day as the largest Hindu Festival outside India which was
being in held at Bhaktivedanta Manor in Hertfordshire.

COMMISSIONER VISTS TEMPLES FOR JANMASHTAMI |
The
Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police visited two local Hindu
temples in Middlesex to celebrate Janmasthami and deliver a message
of unity on Wednesday 20 August 2006. Paul Stephenson was blessed
when he toured the Swaminarayan Temple in Wood Lane, Stanmore and
the Shree Kutch Satsang Swaminarayan temple in Kenton.

| IS
UK FOREIGN POLICY TO BLAME FOR TERRORISM? |
On
10 August 2006, British police took action against an alleged terrorist
plot to blow up a number of aeroplanes. Speculation since about what
could motivate individuals to undertake such action has included allegations
that British foreign policy is 'anti-Islamic' or to blame for terrorism.
Responding to this speculation, Foreign Office Minister Lord Triesman
issued a statement about Britain's Foreign Policies.

FESTIVAL TO BE DEDICATED TO WAR VICTIMS |
A
human chain of thousands will hold hands at the stroke of midnight
on Wednesday 16th August to pray for victims of war and chant a peace
mantra at the largest Hindu gathering in Britain. The Annual Janmastami
festival at Bhaktivedanta Manor ISKCON temple at Watford, which attracts
75,000 people over two days commemorates the 5000 year festival of
the birth of Lord Krishna.
