| ASYLUM
APPLICATIONS AT LOWEST LEVEL IN A DECADE |
Asylum
applications fell in 2005 to their lowest level since 1994 and the
number of removals increased for the fourth consecutive quarter, according
to statistics published by the Home Office today. But the number of
EU Accession State individuals, like those from many Eastern European
Countries, rose to 345,000 including 49,335 who applied to the Worker
Registration Scheme between October & December 2005.

YEAR OLDS DON'T BOTHER TO VOTE |
London
has the worst voter registration level in the country. The 1824 Collective
is a campaign to increase the number of young people who are registered
to vote ahead of the local elections in May. The 1824 Collective was
launched today by leading UK urban artist Estelle and MTV News presenter
Tim Kash in Leicester Square.

GROUPS SUPPORT KEN LIVINGSTONE |
Black
groups around the capital have thrown their weight behind London Mayor
Ken Livingstone in their condemnation of the unelected Adjudication
Panel for Englands decision to suspend the Mayor following his
remarks likening a Jewish 'Evening Standard' reporter to a '(Nazi)
concentration camp guard'. The
Mayor is appealing against his suspension.

- THE MOST RACIST COUNCIL IN THE UK? |
Operation
Black Vote (OBV), a campaign to increase more ethnic minority representation
in Politics, is accusing Lambeth of being the most the racist council
in the UK. In relation to its 40% BME population Lambeth has the least
number of BME councillors in the country - 5 of 63 - less than 10%.
It also has one of the worst voter registration levels in the UK.

IN A RELIGIOUS UPROAR |
A
new French comedy film that mocks Lord Shiva and an advertising campaign
in Greece the depicts images of the Goddess Durga with bottles of
an alcoholic beverage have Hindus from Britain in uproar about exploitation
of their gods for commercial gain. Even travel book covers like 'Holy
Cow!: An Indian Adventure' by Sarah Macdonald wobble on a fine line
between paying homage and religious mockery.

FOR EQUALITY & HUMAN RIGHTS GETS GO-AHEAD |
A
powerful new body, the Commission for Equality and Human Rights (CEHR),
that aims to put equality at the heart of modern Britain got the go-ahead
today as the Equality Act gained Royal Assent. From October 2007,
the CEHR will work with individuals, communities, businesses and public
services to find new, more effective ways to give everyone in society
the chance to achieve their full potential.

DONATE £3.5M TO DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARDS |
The
Hinduja Foundation has donated £3.5m to the Duke of Edinburgh's
Award Scheme. The fund will guarantee an income for The Duke of Edinburghs
Award going forward and marks the 70th birthday of Mr Srichand P Hinduja,
Chairman of the Hinduja Group and Hinduja Foundation who together
with his brothers Gopichand, Prakash, Ashok and their four sons run
the familys international business.

Biodiversity Minister Jim Knight ended his first visit to India having
agreed a way forward to help to reverse the rapid decline in India's
tiger population, which could soon be extinct, with fears growing

AUTHORITIES OBSTRUCT AHMADI MISSION |
The
Pakistan Interior Minister today refused to issue visas to human rights
researchers in time for a fact finding mission arranged through the
Parliamentary Human Rights Group to go ahead. The mission was to have
investigated the protection available in Pakistan for members of the
Ahmadi community, a religious sect that rose to international attention
following the massacre of worshipers in a mosque in Punjab.

Liberal
Democrat leadership contender Chris Huhne MP was welcomed to Wembley
last Friday by a senior Asian Liberal Democrat councillor in Brent,
Chunilal Velji Chavda, as he chose the Green-Works factory as the
venue for his Leadership Manifesto launch. Brent's Asian Liberal Democrat
Councillors Chandubhai Patel and Vijay Shah are also supporting Mr
Huhne.

caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by European
media outlets.

CARTOONS OUTRAGE MUSLIMS |
The
republication of Danish cartoons - including one depicting the Prophet
Mohammed with a bomb in his turban - in major newspapers in France,
have outraged Muslims and resulted in violent backlash against Denmark.
UK Media have shown constraint in not reprinting the cartoons.

GP COLLECTS £100K FOR TSUNAMI HOSPITAL |
Dr
Tushara Wickramanayaka (Tush Wick), a Sri Lankan born GP working in
Milton Keynes, today (3 Feb 2006) collected a cheque for £10,000
from Mayor of Barnet, Andreas Tambourides. Dr Wick outlined her plans
for building a children's hospital in Kalutara, Sri Lanka. The event
was a culmination of Barnet's year long fund-raising drive for the
Tsunami appeal.

Anjana Patel, a West Harrow ward Councillor, has been appointed as
the new Chief Whip of the Harrow Conservative Group by Councillor
Chris Mote, Leader of the Conservative Group on Harrow Council. Cllr
Anjana Patel said, 'I am delighted to be appointed Chief Whip and
join the Conservative leadership team in Harrow. We have a vital election
coming up in May when we hope to take control of Harrow.
