India's
Ambassador in Germany Meera Shankar voiced concern at the mob attack
which left eight of her countrymen injured in the eastern German town
of Muegeln. The vicious attack has fuelled the debate about increasing
violence by right-wing extremists in the eastern part of Germany.
There are some 45,000 Indians settled in Germany.

Nobel
laureate Amartya Sen says India must use resources generated by its
fast economic growth to remedy its continuing deficiencies in basic
health care, in school education and in rapidly expanding physical
infrastructure. "Money will continue to come very rapidly into
the government's hands if the fast economic growth continues,"
he said.

CALL FOR RADICAL RETHINKING ON FLOOD POLICIES |
Oxfam today called for a radical rethink in the way South Asian governments
implement flood defences. Oxfam says that the construction of river
embankments (defences), can make matters worse. In India's worst hit
area, Bihar, embankments have nearly trebled the flood-prone area
from 2.5 million hectares to 6.9 million hectares.

After
having met the Queen, the former Prime Minister of Britain and the
Mayor of London, Shilpa Shetty received one of the highest recognitions
from her homeland India in the form of the 'Rajiv Gandhi National
Quality Award' at a ceremony which took place on 12th August 2007
at National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai.

| OXFAM
LAUNCHES APPEAL FOR SOUTH ASIAN FLOODS |
International
aid agency Oxfam today launched a £1 million appeal for its
work to help nearly 500,000 flood victims in India, Bangladesh and
Nepal. The money will be spent on delivering food, emergency shelter,
hygiene items and clean water and safe sanitation. Altogether 20 million
people have been affected by flooding in the region.

LAUNCHED FOR SOUTH ASIA FLOODS |
Save
the Children has launched an urgent appeal for children who are currently
affected by floods. At least 10 million children across Bangladesh,
India and Pakistan are at risk. Their homes have been swept away and
water supplies have been contaminated.
