ELDERS CLUB CELEBRATES 13TH ANNIVERSARY |
The
Dosti Club, an Asian Elders Club in Milton Keynes, celebrated its
13th year of successful operation on 29th May 2007. The club for Asian
elders, run by the elders, has been operating with since 1994. It
now boasts more than 230 members and has a regular attendance, every
Tuesday, of more than 50 elders.

Actress
and model Liz Hurley almost upstaged patron Cherie Blair at The Asian
Women of Achievement Awards on Wednesday 23 May 2007. The awards,
which applaud
and celebrate the commitment, dedication and determination of Asian
women from all over the country and from all walks of life, were founded
by Pinky Lilani and Munir Samji.

| TORIES
PLAN TO CHANGE MARRIAGE RULES |
The
Conservatives announced proposed policies to stop very young brides
or husbands being brought to this country from overseas. The Shadow
Immigration Minister, Damian Green, today unveiled a three point plan
designed to stop young people being brought to this country who cannot
easily integrate with British Society.

HINDU CONTRIBUTION TO ENDING GLOBAL POVERTY |
Hilary
Benn MP, Labour's Deputy Leader candidate and Secretary of State for
International Development, praised the contribution of the British
Hindu community in eradicating global poverty at a conference organised
by Hindu Aid on 24th May 2007. Hilary Benn, said: 'The largest portion
of international aid from Britain goes to India.

MAKES DIVERSITY PLEDGE |
The
Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces have shown their commitment
to improving representation amongst ethnic minority communities by
signing up for the Next Step Foundation's Diversity Mark scheme. Ethnic
minority representation in the Armed Forces has risen in recent years
to 5.8% in 2007.

TSB DIRECTOR WINS SIKH COMMUNITY AWARD |
Kamel
Hothi, Asian Markets Director at Lloyds TSB has been named a winner
in this years Sikh Women in the Community awards,
in recognition of her commitment to raising cultural awareness within
the financial services sector. She was presented her award by Mayor
of London, Ken Livingstone, at the recent Vaisakhi celebrations in
Trafalgar Square.

COW FOR THE CHOP! |
The
Hindu Council UK (HCUK) has today added its voice to calls to save
the life of Shambo, the sacred bull at the Skanda Vale temple in Wales
who is threatened with slaughter because he has tested positive in
a routine bovine tuberculosis test. The current policy of DEFRA is
to kill any animal suspected of carrying Bovine TB.

| AMARTYA
SEN CHOSEN FOR KIEL PRIZE IN GERMANY |
Indian-born
Nobel Economics laureate Amartya Sen, 73, was one of three recipients
announced for this year's World Economy Prize awarded by a German
think-tank. Sen is to share the prize with a former German chancellor,
Helmut Schmidt, and Ingvar Kamprad, founder of Ikea. Sen won a Nobel
Prize in 1998 for his studies of poverty and development.

AHMAD IS FIRST ASIAN MSP |
Bashir
Ahmad, an India-born businessman from Glasgow, has become the first
Asian to be elected Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP). Ahmad
was one of the four Scottish National Party (SNP) MSPs elected from
the Glasgow region. A founder of the Scott Asians for Independence,
he was born in India and raised in Pakistan.

Voter registration drives, public meetings and election awareness
campaigns Unite Against Fascism and OBV in the run up to local council
elections in the UK have fought off the BNP and the far Right. Furthermore,
Scotland and Wales have made the historic step of electing their first
Asian representatives.

| ETHNIC
MINORITIES 3X MORE LIKELY TO BE ON DNA DATABASE |
The
Liberal Democrats today revealed statistics showing that innocent
people from ethnic minorities are three times more likely to have
had their DNA samples put on the national database. The UK has the
largest database of citizens DNA in the world. Millions of people
have their DNA information stored on police databases - at least five
times higher as a proportion of population than any other country.

NAMES KEN LIVINGSTONE CANDIDATE FOR MAYOR |
After
consulting members across the capital, the London Labour Party has
confirmed Ken Livingstone as the Labour candidate for Mayor of London
election election to be held in 2008. The Conservative Party have
delayed their selection process with many critics saying that they
are unable to find a suitable candidate to stand opposite Ken Livingstone.

On

AFZAL, KARIM TELLS PRESIDENT OF INDIA |
Sajjad
Karim MEP, Liberal Democrat Member of the Subcommittee on Human Rights,
has raised the case of Mohammad Afzal Guru directly with Indian President,
A.J.P. Abdul Kalam. Mohammad Afzal Guru who was sentenced to death
in December 2002 after being convicted of conspiracy to attack the
Indian Parliament.
