UNDERESTIMATES NO. OF FOREIGN WORKERS |
The
Government has twice revised its figure for the increase in the number
of foreign nationals working in the UK since 1997 from 800,000 to
1.1 million - an extra 300,000. Today, the figure was further revised
to to 1.5m not the revised figure of 1.1m as published the night before
(October 29th).

OF THE YEAR: FROM LUCKNOW TO LONDON |
The
2007 Asian of the Year award was presented to Lord Khalid Hameed,
a medical doctor, at a ceremony here Monday night. Lord Hameed, 66,

CAMPAIGN FOR GANDHI STATUE GETS MP BACKING |
Leicester
has launched a campaign to install a statue of Mahatma Gandhi as a
symbol of the city's multiculturalism. The location of the statue
is suggested to be a corner near Belgrave Road. The idea for the statue
came from a local charity organisation, Samanwaya Pariwar, and has
found support from Leicester East MP, Keith Vaz.

Asian communities from claiming much-needed benefits cash, warns Age
Concern. New research has found that almost 6 out of 10 Asian older
people are discouraged from claiming benefits because they find the
system confusing, and 45% are embarrassed about claiming.

Mayor
of London Ken Livingstone today met Mr Pranab Mukherjee, the Indian
Minister of External Affairs to welcome him to London. Mr Mukherjee

The Mayor stressed the importance of London's links with India in

WARSI SPARKS IMMIGRATION ROW FOR TORIES |
Tory
party peer Sayeeda Warsi mired the Conservative Party in controversy
about immigration control by saying that BNP voters "have some
very legitimate views" on the issue in an interview that she
gave to 'The Independent on Sunday Newspaper' (30 September 2007).
Her words were condemned by anti-racist groups who accused her of
using "BNP language" and pandering to a far-right agenda.

LAW AGAINST RELIGIOUS HATRED COMES INTO EFFECT |
Incitement
to religious hatred will today become a criminal offence in England
and Wales with the commencement of the Racial and Religious Hatred
Act. The Act creates a new offence of intentionally stirring up religious
hatred against people on religious grounds, closing a gap in the current
legislation. Jews and Sikhs have been deemed by the courts to be racial
groups and are protected under this legislation.
