Lady
Thatcher supports Indian charity CINI
26 November 2009
Former
UK Prime Minister, Lady Thatcher, lent her support
to respected Indian charity Child in Need in India
(CINI) at a fund-raising evening hosted by The
Rt Hon Lord Forsyth of Drumlean at the House of
Lords on Thursday 26 November 2009. A patron of
the charity, Lord Forsyth welcomed trustees and
supporters of the charity to the River Room, which
was made available by the Lord Speaker, Baroness
Hayman. Lady Thatcher is a long time friend of
Lord and Lady Forsyth. CINIs founder, Dr
Samir Chaudhuri thanked those present for all
their support for the charitys work to help
poor mothers and children in India.
CINI has twice received the
Indian governments National Award for Child
Welfare and Dr Chaudhuri has been honoured internationally
for his humanitarian work, most recently receiving
the Ellis Island Medal of Honor Global Humanitarian
Award, the first time this award has been given
to a non-US citizen.
About CINI
CINI helps mothers and children
in India break free from the cycle of poverty.
It reaches out across all levels of Indian society
by going from door to door in the villages and
slums as well as talking to locally elected representatives
and influencing public policy. Adopting a multi-layered,
rights based approach, CINI works towards a sustainable
improvement in nutrition, healthcare and education
while trying to protect children whose lives are
blighted by poverty. The charity currently has
an appeal through which all online donations to
its work to help the families worst affected by
malnutrition will be matched. Further details
about the charity and its Double Your Impact campaign
can be found at www.cini.org.uk.
