Britain's
new Coalition Government
12 May 2010
In
a historic move, Prime Minister David Cameron
today held the first joint press conference with
Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg at No 10 Downing
Street, London. The move represents the first
British coalition government in sixty-five years
and was formed between The Conservative Party
and The Liberal Democrat Party after the UK General
Election held on Thursday 6th May 2010 resulted
in a "hung parliament" with no party
attaining an outright majority. The Conservative
Party won 306 seats (36.1% of the votes), 20 seats
short of an outright majority; the Labour Party
won 258 seats (29% of votes), the Liberal Democrat
Party won 57 seats (23% of votes) with other parties
accounting for 28 seats (11.9%). Voter turnout
was high with 65.1% of those registered voting.
The Leaders of both parties, David Cameron and
Nick Clegg, agreed to work together in "the
national interest".
