The
accomplishments of ten pioneering Asian women were
celebrated at the Asian Women of Achievement Awards
2011 ceremony in London's Park Lane last night (19th
May 2011) attended by the Home Secretary Theresa
May, entrepreneur James Caan and wife of deputy
prime minister, Miriam Clegg. Among the winners
were Kamal Basran, founder of the UK's leading ethnic
food supplier, The Authentic Food Company; Noor
Ali, Asda's ethnic buyer and Dr Aisha K Gill (pictured
left), senior lecturer in criminology at Roehampton
University who is working to provide research on
criminal justice responses for UK women from an
ethnic minority and has published several papers
on the subject.
Winner of the prestigious
Lloyds Bank Corporate Markets AWA Award was Amerdeep
Somal, commissioner at the Independent Police
Complaints Commission (IPCC), which handles cases
against police forces in England and Wales. Amerdeep
has played a key role in high-profile and sensitive
cases, such as Jean Charles de Menezes and Fiona
Pilkington. The judges praised for her deep personal
commitment to justice and effective, fair policing
as well as her efforts in tackling domestic violence
within the Asian community.
An exceptionally high calibre
of finalists in the media category meant there
were two joint winners, director of communications
at the Home Office; Yasmin Diamond; and BBC presenter
Ritula Shah. Both were described by the judges
as beacons of success for Asian women in the media
industry and ones to watch for the future.
This year's other winners
were
The Arts & Culture
Award: Pioneer of Asian art and dance,
Anusha Subramanyam, who has helped change
the opinion of disability in India through therapeutic
dance.
Business Woman of the
Year: Asda's ethnic buyer, Noor Ali,
who also supports a range of charitable organisations
such as EMAG (Ethic Minority Advisory Group),
Race for Opportunity and the Mosaic Group.
Entrepreneur of the
Year Award:Kamal Basran, founder
of the UK's leading ethnic food supplier, The
Authentic Food Company.
Media Professional
of the Year: Joint winners Ritula Shah,
presenter of BBC Radio 4's The World Tonight
programme and Yasmin Diamond CB, director
of communications at the Home Office
The Social & Humanitarian
Award: Shezmin Madhani, founder and trustee
of Nia Children's Foundation, a charity which
aims to support the health and education of
children in Africa.
Young Achiever of the
Year: 29-year old Shireen Irani,
a lawyer and founder of non-profit legal website
i-ProBono, who has worked across the globe.
Professional of the
Year: Dr Aisha K Gill, senior lecturer in
criminology at Roehampton University working
to provide research on criminal justice responses
for UK women from an ethnic minority and in
addition she has published several papers on
the subject.
The Public Sector Award:
Detective inspector of the West Midlands police
force, Khizra Dhindsa who was praised
for her fearless nature and commitment to her
community.
