Women of Achievement Awards 2008 Shortlist Announced |
The
shortlist has been announced for the Asian Women of Achievement Awards
2008. Asian women in line for the coveted awards range from entrepreneur
Hasfa Abubacker, who has generated a turnover of £8.5m in just
four years for Pitchwell, a company she started in the spare room
of her flat, through to actress Nina Wadia, journalist Navdip Dhariwal,
and Kiss Radio's DJ Neev (pictured).

Bangladeshi visits UK's carbon-neutral housing project |
Yesterday,
Khodeza Rume, Oxfam Programme Manager from Bangladesh, visited BedZed,
the UKs largest carbon-neutral housing development, to warn
of increased risks of natural disasters and see how people in the
South East are getting involved in the fight against climate change.
Climate change is already having a major effect on Bangladesh.

| Monty
launches volunteering scheme specifically for UK Indians |
The
UKs first volunteering scheme to target the Indian diaspora was launched
today in North West London with the support of cricketing hero Monty
Panesar. Sewa Volunteers is a flagship initiative of British charity
- Sewa International, seeks to make it easier for volunteers to find
local groups that can make good use of their time, skills, and experiences.

Rich List 2008: Mittal tops Britain's rich list
again |
Indian
steel tycoon Lakshmi Niwas Mittal has once again topped the Sunday
Times Rich List - the definitive rundown of Britain's wealthiest people.
Mittal and the Hinduja brothers Srichand and Gopichand are the two
Indian business conglomerates that dominated the list for 2008 in
the midst of a global credit crunch.

Minister attends Labour Friends of India Annual Luncheon 2008 |
The
Prime Minister, Gordon Brown presented Lord Neil Kinnock with the
Fenner Brockway Medal for the services of the British Council in India
at the Labour Friends of India Annual Luncheon, on Tuesday
22 April 2008 in London. The Prime Minister, in his speech said "I
want India and Britain to work in even closer relationships".

| Stop
immigration raids on curry houses, says Keith Vaz |
Keith
Vaz, chairman of the British parliament's Home Affairs Select Committee,
Thursday called for an immediate halt on immigration raids being carried
out on South Asian restaurants, saying they are having a devastating
effect on Britain's catering industry and threatening Britain's status
as the cuisine capital of Europe. His call came on the day the government
officially launched the UK Border Agency.

A
'No-Gandhi' campaign has sprung up in Leicester following a move by
its large Asian population to install a statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
Although Leicester is predicted to become Britain's first white-minority
city in 2020, some residents believe plans to install a commemorative
statue should honour a local hero like footballer Gary Lineker.

Council axe falls heavily on Asian Arts |
The
Arts Council axe has fallen heavily on Asian arts in the UK, with
the announcement that London Asian arts venue Watermans is set to
loose its £500,000 grant and that leading theatre company Tara
Arts has lost 50% of its £340,000 funding.
