Maiyuran
Ratneswaran (born 23 July 1990) started fencing when he was 12 with
Mike Matthews at Whitgift School, following his brother who also
fenced at the school. Since then he has won a host of titles including
his age-group title at the British Youth Championships for the past
three years, the Cadet National Championships in 2006 and the Public
Schools Championships in 2007. He was second in the UK School Games
in 2006 and helped England to victory in the team event. Ratneswaran
represents Great Britain at Cadet and Junior level and was 14th
in the Pisa Cadet International. He has also had success at senior
level winning the Invicta open in 2007 and finishing 5th in the
Birmingham International. Ratneswaran was Wandsworth's U21 Sports
Person of the Year in 2006.
He is currently studying
medicine (2nd Year) at Imperial College London having achieved 6
A's at A-level and straight A*s at GCSE, whilst also attaining a
Goethe Institute Diploma in German with distinction. He won an Arkwright
National Scholarship in Design and Technology and currently holds
a scholarship at Imperial College, London.
In sport, Ratneswaran
has a Black Belt in Renshinkai Karate and is currently both the
Great Britain U20 fencing team (captain) and a squad member of the
Senior Great Britain fencing team. He has been 7 times national
champion at various age categories, whilst being a Junior Commonwealth
games double medallist (gold and silver). Ratneswaran has competed
at various world championships and is currently ranked No. 1 in
the U20 rankings and No. 2 at the Senior National Championships.
