SHARMILA NEBHRAJANI
Sharmila Nebhrajani, chief operating officer, Media and Technology Division, BBC, London

Sharmila NebhrajaniBy the time Sharmila was 30 she had gained an MA from St Anne's College, Oxford in Physiological Sciences, qualified as an accountant, worked for Coopers & Lybrand where she advised on business issues, completed pro bono work for the Cabinet Office, worked in a scientific advisory role at the Human Fertilisation & Embryo Authority (HFEA) and joined the BBC as Head of Corporate Planning. Sharmila held this post during the delicate transition period of director generals from John Birt to Greg Dyke.

Now Chief Operating Officer at the BBC's new Media and Technology division Sharmila has led significant changes in 'new media.' Sharmila has bridged the gap between the commercial and public service identities of the BBC, as well as being responsible for operational management, financial and business strategy and value for money.

Sharmila has continued her work with the HFEA and is now their Deputy Chair. It is an organisation at the forefront of issues involving stem-cell technologies in the UK. Sharmila is also involved with the Human Tissue Authority.

Sharmila has two children and is tipped to become a leading British broadcaster in the next 10 years.
