SHOBANA JEYASINGH

Celebrated for her singular talent, Jeyasingh is a world renowned choreographer and artistic director. Born in Madras, now living in London, she has directed the Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company since 1988. Today, the company has established itself as the leading exponent of contemporary Indian dance.

Her choreography for the company includes Phantasmaton (2002), Web (2001) and Surface Tension (2000). Very much an artist of the moment, her two latest works Faultline and City:zen both break new ground. Her recent work also includes sitespecific performances created for The Greenwich Borough Hall (with a live web cast from Bangalore, India) and for The City Hall, London.

She has produced TV work for the BBC and Channel 4 while she has also produced work for the National Theatre, the Theatre Royal and the Royal National Theatre. Shobana’s string of awards attests her artistic quality. Most notably she won a London Dance and Performance award in 1988 and in 1993, and her company was the overall winner of the prestigious Prudential Award for the Arts. Awarded an MBE in January 1995 for services to dance, there is a whole new generation of dancers and choreographers who owe their existence to her ground breaking work and training.
