SIMI
CHOWDHRY
Simi Chowdhry, director of Awaz Utaoh, Bristol
Simi
came to Bristol in 1968, after graduating from Delhi University
in India. She was shocked by the lack of opportunities at that time
for South Asian youth in Bristol and Asian communities in general.
Simi has dedicated 25 years of her life to the empowerment of and
development of South Asian communities and women in particular,
helping them to escape the effects of social and economic deprivation.
Simi trained and became a youth worker and in 1971.
Simi
has led the way in developing the infrastructure that the South
Asian community of Bristol enjoys today. Her contributions in both
paid and voluntary capacity has include the establishment of the
first South Asian youth service, the initiation of the only Sikh
cultural centre, the day centre for elderly Asians and the only
South Asian community safety and development service.
Today
Simi works as director of Awaz Utaoh and is dealing with taboo subjects
the South Asian community has traditionally shunned. These include
domestic violence, victim support, drug abuse and forced marriages.
Her ethos from the outset has been one of integration and empowerment
to develop a cohesive Bristol. Simi has also produced and presented
the award-winning Asian radio show on BBC Radio Bristol, giving
the local community a medium to air their views and canvas support.
Her concern for the health of the local Asian community has also
resulted in the Asian Walking Project.
