Zubeida Malik has enjoyed an extraordinary year of journalism, bringing to the Today programme high profile exclusive interviews, superb reportage from a war zone and domestic social analysis and investigative work. She was one of the first reporters to get into Pakistan arriving 24 hours after September 11th, and reported continuously on the War from both Pakistan and Afghanistan for almost three months. Zubeida was the first British journalist to secure and interview with the Taliban and the only women they spoke to throughout the war.

Her reports from the front-line in Israeli-occupied Palestine yielded perhaps her finest work of the year, a feature profiling a Palestinian suicide bomber. In this groundbreaking piece, Zubeida explored what makes a man or woman want to blow themself up at the same time as killing people. She also interviewed the elusive leader of Hamas, another man who rarely talks to female journalists.
