AMANDA LAMB BUILDS FUTURES IN INDIA FOR SHELTER
(4 May 2007)

Amanda Lamb in IndiaTV presenter Amanda Lamb returned from the adventure of a lifetime this week after she visited Pondicherry in India to build better futures for families affected by the tsunami in aid of housing and homelessness charity Shelter. Amanda joined a team of thirteen volunteers to help build homes for families who had lost theirs during the 2004 tsunami. The money raised from the trip goes towards helping Shelter tackle bad housing and homelessness in Britain.

Volunteers for the Building Futures project spent five days working with families in India to build much-needed new homes. During the tsunami the village of Chinnakottakuppam in Pondicherry was flooded, with many of the houses completely destroyed. Amanda and her team helped to build the first new house in the village - a massive achievement for the team and a crucial first step on the road to recovery for the village.

Amanda said: "Owning a property abroad is a luxury many of us are lucky to aspire to, but for many even a basic shelter is out of reach. That's why I wanted to take part in this years Building Futures project in India."

"It was the trip of a lifetime and I got the opportunity to give communities in India the chance to have a proper home whilst enabling Shelter to help end the misery of bad housing for over one million children in Britain."
