About
the United Sports Cricket Club
The Cricket Club was formed in 1969, under the name of "United
Youngsters". It was born full of spirit, unity, youth and
the opportunity to play club cricket. The early years were
filled with hardship and struggle, but members worked together
with much co-operation and enthusiasm overcoming obstacles
encountered along the way. Their efforts laid the solid foundation
on which the club stands today - proud and strong.
Since the early years, the Club's activities have revolved
around cricket and social gatherings. The social functions
have always been orientated towards the family and have included,
Navratri Garba, coach trips, barbecues as well as Diwali and
Christmas celebrations. USC was one of the first organisations
to hold Navratri Garbas, a tradition that continues some 21
years later. So far all these functions have been organised
successfully, giving pleasure and happiness to members and
supporters alike.
In the early cricketing years, the team had to travel by bus
or train to away matches, burdened with a heavy cricket kit.
Despite this, the team spirit was "sky high" with
everyone playing in unity. The batting was powerful, the bowling
clinical and the fielding exceptional leading to good results
during those early seasons. The skills and sportsmanship earned
the team respect throughout Middlesex and surrounding counties.
Over the years the "youth" who founded the Club
have aged and become burdened with other responsibilities.
In their place a new generation of "youth" are blending
together to produce a team of the old calibre. United even
have players from 3 generations of family still playing! The
changes in style and attitude of the USC was recently featured
in a Channel 4 documentary entitled "The Cricket Tests of
Marcus Howe".
The future growth and progress of the Club is not limited
by sporting ability alone but by the availability of cricket
facilities. The Club is unlikely to have the financial resources
to secure a private ground, which is the prime requirement
in the English cricket structure. In fact, the structure itself
may have failed clubs like USC who play most of their cricket
on county council grounds.
The prospect of individuals using the Club as a stepping stone
to international cricket is still a reality however. One Club
member has already represented the Kenyan National Team. We
strive and look forward to the day when other such players
arise from the United Sports Club.
We currently have a colts section, Saturday XI who play in
the Fullers Middlesex Championship League, Sunday 1st XI playing
in the MPCL and Sunday 2nd XI playing friendlies.
