The
league was set up in January 1992 by 15 clubs who were then playing
in the Middlesex Club Cricketers League. The MCCL were spread over
several counties which led to a declining level of organisational
support, lack of communications, poor grounds, lack of umpires,
long travelling times on a Sunday and resulted in financial difficulties
for the league.
The late
Bipin Patel (Suraj Victor) and Jayesh Patel (Anson) were the principal
leaders, who with the support of Arvind Patel (United Sports) laid
the foundations for the Middlesex Premier Cricket League. The league
has solid support in the committee with the likes of Mohansinh Darbar
(Rajput Samaj Sports Club), Shawn Dhaliwal (North London Drifters),
Hari Balasubramaniam (Neasden & Lankians) and myself who have all
served on the committee in various posts for more than 5 years each.
The new
league started with 15 clubs and two divisions in 1992 that by 2000
had grown to 28 clubs in 4 divisions. In 2002 we added a 2nd XI
competition to encourage the youth and retain the experienced players.
Today we also have well established knockout competitions in the
form of the Baker Tilly Cup and Baker Tilly plate.
The league
has been sponsored for 12 years by John Cumming Ross, Chartered
Accountants, has helped the league maintain recreational cricket
and we are now firmly established as one of the major Sunday cricket
leagues in Middlesex. John Cumming Ross has now become part of Baker
Tilly who will be continuing the sponsorship of the league.
Sunil
M Gavaskar has always taken a keen interest in our league. He has
been present at several games and functions organised by the league
during it's history. In 2004, Sunil agreed to act as the patron
to the league.
