Middlesex
Premier Cricket League (MPCL) played Middlesex County Cricket
League (MCCL) in the quarter-finals of the Inter League
Sovereign Cup. On a cloudy and windy day MPCL were asked
to bat first. MPCL openers Kirit Chhaniara (29) and Rahul
Patel (9) scored at five an over before Rahul was dismissed
by Higben. Despite a useful contribution from Paritosh Ghadiali
(24), wickets fell at regular intervals with both Peploe
(3-21) and Goodchild (1-22) putting MCCL in control.
By
the fortieth over MPCL had only notched up 120-8, however
useful knocks from Hitesh Sejpal (10) and Rakesh Patel (15)
gave MPCL a some hope with a total of 146 in 45 overs. J
Le Fort picked up two useful wickets at the end for only
13 runs, whilst Kamlesh Desai and Rakesh Patel shared a
useful last wicket 18-run partnership.
Middlesex
County Cricket League (MCCL) got off to a disastrous start
as Hitesh Sejpal (2-22) and Rakesh Patel (4-15) removed
4 batsmen with zero runs scored. With a score standing at
17, two catches went down from K Ranasinghe (19) and M Ali
(28), who gave MCCL some scoring stability.
A
spin attack from David Sweeney (3-28) and Kamlesh Desai
(0-13) put MPCL back in command as MCCL were reduced to
72-8. Kamlesh Desai bowled his ten overs for only 13 runs.
MCCL skipper G Pooley (32no) and E Hodges shared a 27-run
partnership which brought a glimmer of hope to the MCCL
team. However, the return of Rakesh Patel, MPCL captain,
onto the bowling scene resulted in two dismissals as MCCL
were all out for 109 in 40.4 overs.
MPCL
won the match by 37 runs to the delight of Manager Anil
Patel.
MPCL
is home in the semi-finals on Wednesday 25th July 2001.
