KHAN IS BASA 'SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR' 2007

Amir Khan was awarded the 'Sports Personality of the Year' 2007
prize on February 16th 2008 at the British Asian Sports Awards (BASA).
This year, BASA - the UK's only Asian Sports Awards programme -
acknowledged a variety of sporting fields and abilities, with winners
including Amir Khan, Ajmal Maqsood Ahmed (Football), Jatinder Singh
Rakhra (Wrestling), Vishwanathan Anand (Chess), Azeem Rafiq (Cricket),
Vikash Dhorasoo (Lifetime Achievement), Thomas John (Badminton)
and Nischele Patel (Tae Kwondo) and Maira Malik (Martial Arts) in
the Junior Sports Personality categories. Businessman Nat Puri was
honoured for his commitment to sport.

Amir Khan (Boxing)
The IBF - Intercontinental Champion, commonwealth light
weight champ, ranked 4 in WBO world light weight rankings. He
recently successfully defended his Commonwealth Lightweight
Title. |
Outstanding Achievement Award
Ajmal Maqsood Ahmed (Football)
Ajmal plays for the Blind England Football Team. He
has won over 50 caps for England. Playing in 4 European Championships
and 4 World Cups for England. Ajmal is the first British Asian
to play football for the England team. |

Up & Coming Sports Personality Of The Year 2007
Jatinder Singh Rakhra (Wrestling)
Represents Great Britain in National and International
tournaments. Jatinder has been 8 times British Champion. He
is also representing GB 2008 Senior Olympic qualifiers for Beijing
also in Olympic hopeful team for 2012 and Commonwealth Games
2010. |

Sports Personality Of The Year
Vishwanathan Anand (Chess)
Vishwanathan is an Indian chess grandmaster and the
current World Chess Champion. Anand is one of four players in
history to break the 2800 mark on the FIDE rating list and he
has been among the top three ranked players in classical time
control chess in the world continuously since 1997. |
Junior
Sports Personality Of The Year 2007 - Male U18
Azeem Rafiq (Cricket)
Previously England U16 Captain and has an Academy contract
at Yorkshire CCC. Azeem is the youngest player ever to be on
the ECB. He has also been 12th man for Yorkshire CCC. He is
believed to be the first Yorkshire player of Asian background
to captain an England side at any level. |

Sports Personality Of The Year 2007 - Female U18
Nischele Patel (Tae Kwondo)
Represents Great Britain and is seeded number 3 in the
UK. In the British National Championships in 2007, Nischele
gained a bronze. |

Young Sports Personality Of The Year 2007 U10
Maira Malik (Martial Arts)
Maira is a schoolgirl who has achieved her Red Belt
and Junior Black Belt, and has been chosen to be in the demonstration
team for her martial arts club in Liverpool. |

Thomas John (Badminton)
Coaching for past 25 years, Thomas coached national
champions and World Class players from 1999. He also coached
a silver medallist at Commonwealth Games 2006. |
After
receiving his award, Sports Personality of the Year winner Amir
Khan commented: "It is a great honour to be recognised by BASA
for this award - both personally and publicly. There is a lot of
sporting talent out there in the British Asian community, and it
is award programmes like this that inspire more to come forward
and be counted. I feel really proud to be in a position to encourage
more young people to enter professional sports."
