Indian-origin women are listed in the FT 'Top
50 Women in World Business' list, with Indra
Nooyi, CEO of PepsiCo listed in first place.
Also listed are: Vinita Bali of India's Britannia
Industries in 22nd place, Ruby MacGregor-Smith,
CEO of UK-based Mitie Group in 32nd place,
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw of Indian biotechnology
company, Biocon, in 47th place and Shobana
Bhartia of India's HT Media group in 48th
place.

buy Indian-owned company |
BlackBerry
maker Research In Motion (RIM) has launched
a fresh bid to acquire Indian-owned Certicom
Corp. which supplies vital technology for
its smart phones. Based in Mississauga on
the outskirts of Toronto, Certicom, which
is headed by CEO Karna Gupta, is a global
leader in encryption technology used by RIM
to build secure messaging system in its BlackBerry
smart phones.

| 'Buy
American' plan could invite retaliation from
India, China: US study |
A
new US study has asked the US Congress to
delete "Buy American" provisions
from an over $800 billion economic stimulus
bill lest it may encourage key suppliers like
China, India, and Brazil to retaliate. Based
on economic and legal analysis,the study authors
concluded that the Buy American provisions
would violate US trade obligations with very
little impact on US jobs.

Indians make it to Forbes' Midas List 2009 |
Seven
Indians have made it to the Forbes magazine's
coveted list of top 100 start-up investors
who put their "Midas touch" to help
grow adolescent companies into profit-making
ventures in the midst of a global financial
meltdown. The Midas List 2009 features at
least seven India-born investors led by Ram
Shriram in the third position. The list is
topped by John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins Caufield
& Byers followed by Sequoia Capital's
Michael Moritz.

| US consumer
spending plunges to a 47-year low |
US
consumers cut spending for a sixth straight
month in December, capping off the worst year
for consumer spending since 1961 and pointing
to a further slide in the US economy reeling
from its worst crisis in decades. A Commerce
Department report showed spending by individuals
fell 1% in December.
