PHILANTHROPIST SUDHIR PARIKH HONORED BY US CONGRESS
(February 20, 2006)

Sudhir ParikhHouston, TX: New Jersey-based allergist and philanthropist Sudhir Parikh, who won this year's Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, has been honoured in the US Congress with a special mention in its records. Congressmen Frank Pallone, Junior, and Rep Joe Crowley inserted a two-page statement into the Congressional Record Wednesday honouring Parikh for winning the annual civilian award presented by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs during the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas held in Hyderabad in January. The first awarded to a non-resident Indian (NRI).

Highlighting numerous important accomplishments made by Parikh, who migrated to the US in late 1970s, the statement issued on Wednesday said: "Dr Parikh is an asset to the Indian American community, and his efforts are deserving of this great award. Sudhir fully embodies the commitment and values the NRI award presents."

"We rise today to congratulate Sudhir Parikh, a prominent Indian American physician, activist, and philanthropist, who was selected earlier this year to receive the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award for 2006, the highest civilian honour bestowed by India on non-resident Indians," said a representative on the floor of the house.

Parikh had made a significant difference in US-India relations, himself being a former president of the Association of American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin as well as former president of the Indian American Forum for Political Education, it said. Using his position in these prominent organizations, he had labored to promote Indian -American issues in Congress and to raise awareness within the Indian community, it added. Parikh has contributed more than $2 million for cancer research, tsunami relief and rehabilitation of earthquake victims in Gujarat that occurred in 2001.
