make history as 5 elected MLAs in Alberta |
Five
Indo-Canadians have been elected as lawmakers in Canada's booming
province of Alberta. In the outgoing Alberta assembly there was only
one MLA of Indian origin - Shiraz Sharif, who was born in east Africa.
The newly elected Indo-Canadian lawmakers are: Manjeet Bhullar, Darshan
Kang, Naresh Bharadwaj, Peter Sandhu and Raj Sherman.

lose challenge to helmet rule in Canada |
A
city court has ruled that Sikhs in Ontario province cannot drive motorcycles
without helmets. Ontario Court Judge James Blacklock gave his ruling
Thursday while dismissing a challenge to the Ontario Highway Traffic
Act by a local Sikh Baljinder Singh Badesha who was fined $110 in
September 2005 for driving his motorcycle without a helmet.

develops bio-sensor to track food toxins |
An
Indian-American has developed a revolutionary new bio-sensor capable
of simultaneously screening thousands of food samples for deadly pathogens.
Besides taking the pain out of such analysis, the technique helps
neutralise potential threats and improve food-processing techniques,
said Arun Bhunia, a professor of food science at Purdue University.
